Trump, Putin, and the Nobel Peace Prize Question
This might be the first time in history that anyone has actively campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize for himself. Yet if Donald Trump’s effort bears fruit — if he genuinely manages to bring the Ukraine war to an end — then why not? Give the man the Peace Prize. The award has gone to stranger recipients in the past, and if the outcome is real peace, that should count for something.
What’s striking, though, is not just the possibility of peace, but how low the bar has sunk for what qualifies as major political news. The fact that Trump and Putin meeting in person is treated as a headline event says something troubling about global politics. Meeting face to face should be the easiest thing for leaders to do — the starting point for diplomacy, not the pinnacle of it.
Somewhere along the way, basic dialogue became a rare spectacle instead of a routine act of statecraft. In a healthier political climate, two heads of state talking wouldn’t be a front-page story — the agreement they reach (or fail to reach) would be. Instead, the meeting itself becomes the drama, as if just showing up is an achievement.
If the Trump–Putin sit-down turns into a real step toward ending the war, it will deserve recognition. But maybe the deeper lesson here is that global politics shouldn’t be so starved of normal diplomacy that simply meeting is treated as a breakthrough.

शायद यह इतिहास में पहली बार हो रहा है कि कोई व्यक्ति खुद के लिए नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार पाने के लिए खुलकर प्रचार कर रहा है। फिर भी, अगर डोनाल्ड ट्रंप की कोशिश रंग लाती है — अगर वे सच में यूक्रेन युद्ध को खत्म करने में सफल हो जाते हैं — तो क्यों नहीं? उन्हें शांति पुरस्कार दे देना चाहिए। अतीत में यह पुरस्कार और भी अजीब प्राप्तकर्ताओं को दिया जा चुका है, और अगर नतीजा असली शांति है, तो यह काबिल-ए-गौर है।
लेकिन गौर करने वाली बात सिर्फ शांति की संभावना नहीं है, बल्कि यह भी है कि अब राजनीति में कितनी नीचे गिरावट आ चुकी है कि ट्रंप और पुतिन का आमने-सामने मिलना ही बड़ी खबर बन जाता है। आमने-सामने मिलना तो नेताओं के लिए सबसे आसान काम होना चाहिए — कूटनीति की शुरुआती सीढ़ी, न कि उसकी चोटी।
किसी समय, सीधी बातचीत करना सामान्य और सहज बात हुआ करती थी। लेकिन अब ऐसा लगता है कि वैश्विक राजनीति में यह इतनी दुर्लभ हो गई है कि इसे किसी तमाशे की तरह पेश किया जाता है। स्वस्थ राजनीतिक माहौल में, दो राष्ट्राध्यक्षों का मिलना मुख्य खबर नहीं होता — बल्कि उनकी मुलाकात से निकला समझौता (या उसकी नाकामी) खबर बनती है। आज इसके उलट, मुलाकात खुद ही नाटक बन जाती है, जैसे केवल पहुंच जाना ही उपलब्धि हो।
अगर ट्रंप–पुतिन की यह बैठक सचमुच युद्ध खत्म करने की दिशा में एक ठोस कदम बनती है, तो इसे मान्यता मिलनी चाहिए। लेकिन शायद इससे भी बड़ा सबक यह है कि वैश्विक राजनीति को इतनी भूखी नहीं होनी चाहिए कि सामान्य कूटनीति को भी किसी बड़ी सफलता के रूप में पेश करना पड़े।
