Is Zelensky a Clown Also in Office?
Volodymyr Zelensky built his public identity as a professional comedian and actor. His rise from satire to statesmanship was meteoric—an entertainer who became president on the promise of shaking up the old order. But now, years into the devastating war with Russia, critics ask: is Zelensky still playing the clown, even in office?
The Trap of the Military-Industrial Complex
Zelensky does have political moves available to him—moves that could end the war. But he has not taken them. Why?
One explanation lies in the shadow of the U.S. military-industrial complex, a term coined by President Dwight Eisenhower in his farewell address. It is an industry that thrives only in times of conflict. Peace means shrinking profits, shuttered factories, and waning influence. For Washington’s war lobby, an endless war is preferable to an imperfect peace.
Russia’s own military-industrial complex is perhaps even more insidious. While the U.S. economy has many pillars, Russia leans heavily on oil and arms. Without war and arms sales, Moscow’s economic engine sputters.
Caught between these two complexes, Ukraine risks becoming a perpetual battlefield, a stage where both powers pursue their narratives of profit and dominance. To break free, Zelensky must show political imagination.
Lessons from Nepal
In 2005–06, Nepal faced a brutal civil war. The United States wanted to flood the government with weapons to crush Maoist rebels. But there was no military solution. Peace came only when all sides rejected that illusion and embraced politics.
The same is true for Ukraine. Russia is a major military power. If a battlefield victory were possible, the U.S. would have already supplied Ukraine with the deadliest of weapons. The fact that Washington holds back tells its own story: the military path is futile.
Sanctions, too, are not political solutions. They aim to weaken the enemy until it can no longer fight. That is still a military strategy, dressed up in economic clothing.
Why Ceasefire-First Has Failed
Many argue for an immediate ceasefire. Yet ceasefire-first has been attempted for almost a year with no success. Why? Because it ducks the political questions at the heart of the conflict. Pretending politics can wait has only prolonged the bloodshed.
Peace requires the opposite: a full political package first, then a ceasefire.
The Political Moves Zelensky Can Make
Zelensky has enormous political cards to play, but he has so far refused to lay them on the table. Instead of chasing applause tours across Western capitals, he could take the following steps to truly pursue peace:

Seek a New Mandate
Zelensky must run for president again, but to do so he needs peace. His first pledge should be simple: “I need peace to seek a new mandate.” -
Delete the NATO Clause
Ukraine’s constitution enshrines NATO membership as a goal. But writing NATO into law doesn’t make membership real, and deleting it won’t block it if consensus emerges later. Keeping the clause is a provocation; deleting it is a gesture of peace. -
Federalize Ukraine
Grant autonomy to all regions, ensuring language and cultural rights. Make Russian an official second language of government administration, reflecting demographic reality. -
Hold Referenda in Disputed Territories
Crimea and other disputed regions should decide their own futures in UN-supervised referenda. Citizens should choose among three options:-
Stay in a federal Ukraine with guaranteed rights

Become independent

Join Russia

Invite UN Peacekeepers
Both Russian and Ukrainian forces should withdraw not only from disputed territories but also fifty miles beyond them. UN peacekeepers can then step in to maintain order while refugees return home. -
Link Sanctions to Progress
Sanctions on Russia should be lifted step by step, aligned with progress in ceasefire, referenda, and compliance. This creates incentives for Moscow to respect the process.
The Roadmap to Peace
The sequence is straightforward:

Zelensky pledges reforms.

Both sides withdraw under UN supervision.

Refugees return, elections resume, and Zelensky seeks a new mandate based on his peace program.

Ukraine becomes federal, referenda follow, sanctions are lifted as Russia complies.
This is the political imagination needed to end the war.
Conclusion: From Clown to Statesman?
Zelensky has the power to end the war. He can move Ukraine beyond destruction and toward dignity. If he takes bold political steps, he could even earn the Nobel Peace Prize.
But if he clings to Western applause and refuses to imagine peace, then yes—he remains the clown in office, playing a tragic role on the world stage.
The choice is his. Show some imagination, clown.

रूस का सैन्य-औद्योगिक तंत्र शायद और भी खतरनाक है। जहाँ अमेरिका की अर्थव्यवस्था में कई स्तंभ हैं, रूस तेल और हथियारों पर बहुत अधिक निर्भर है। युद्ध और हथियार बिक्री के बिना रूस की आर्थिक मशीन अटक जाती है।
इन दोनों तंत्रों के बीच फँसा यूक्रेन एक स्थायी युद्धक्षेत्र बनने का ख़तरा झेल रहा है। ज़ेलेंस्की को इससे बाहर निकलने के लिए राजनीतिक कल्पनाशीलता दिखानी होगी।
नेपाल से सीख
2005–06 में नेपाल ने भीषण गृहयुद्ध झेला। अमेरिका सरकार को हथियारों से लैस कर माओवादी विद्रोहियों को कुचलना चाहती थी। लेकिन कोई सैन्य समाधान संभव नहीं था। शांति तब आई जब सभी पक्षों ने उस भ्रम को छोड़कर राजनीति को अपनाया।
यूक्रेन के मामले में भी यही सच है। रूस एक बड़ा सैन्य बल है। यदि युद्धक्षेत्र में जीत संभव होती तो अमेरिका अब तक यूक्रेन को सबसे घातक हथियार दे चुका होता। यह तथ्य कि वॉशिंगटन पीछे है, अपने आप में कहानी कहता है: सैन्य रास्ता व्यर्थ है।
आर्थिक प्रतिबंध भी राजनीतिक समाधान नहीं हैं। उनका मक़सद दुश्मन को इतना कमज़ोर करना है कि वह लड़ न सके। यह भी मूलतः सैन्य रणनीति ही है।
क्यों असफल रहा ‘सीज़फ़ायर-प्रथम’
कई लोग तत्काल युद्धविराम की बात करते हैं। लेकिन यह लगभग एक साल से आज़माया जा रहा है और असफल रहा है। क्यों? क्योंकि इससे राजनीतिक सवालों से बचने की कोशिश की गई है। यह मानना कि राजनीति बाद में की जा सकती है, केवल रक्तपात को लंबा करता है।
शांति के लिए ज़रूरी है उलटा रास्ता: पहले पूरा राजनीतिक पैकेज, फिर युद्धविराम।
ज़ेलेंस्की क्या कर सकते हैं?
ज़ेलेंस्की के पास कई राजनीतिक पत्ते हैं, लेकिन वे उन्हें टेबल पर नहीं रखते। पश्चिमी तालियों के पीछे भागने के बजाय वे ये ठोस कदम उठा सकते हैं:

नया जनादेश लें
ज़ेलेंस्की को फिर से राष्ट्रपति चुनाव लड़ना चाहिए। पहला वादा होना चाहिए: “मुझे नया जनादेश पाने के लिए शांति चाहिए।” -
नाटो क्लॉज़ हटाएँ

यूक्रेन को संघीय देश बनाएँ
सभी क्षेत्रों को स्वायत्तता दें, भाषा और संस्कृति अधिकारों की गारंटी करें। रूसी भाषा को दूसरी सरकारी भाषा घोषित करें। -
विवादित क्षेत्रों में जनमत-संग्रह
क्रीमिया समेत सभी क्षेत्रों में संयुक्त राष्ट्र की निगरानी में जनमत-संग्रह कराएँ। तीन विकल्प हों:-
संघीय यूक्रेन में बने रहना

संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति-रक्षकों को बुलाएँ
यूक्रेनी और रूसी सेनाएँ न केवल विवादित क्षेत्रों से हटें बल्कि 50 मील पीछे जाएँ। संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति-सेनाएँ लौटे हुए शरणार्थियों के बीच व्यवस्था बनाए रखें। -
प्रतिबंधों को प्रगति से जोड़ें
रूस पर लगे प्रतिबंध चरणबद्ध तरीके से हटें, जैसे-जैसे सीज़फ़ायर, जनमत-संग्रह और अनुपालन आगे बढ़े।
शांति का रोडमैप
क्रम साफ़ है:

ज़ेलेंस्की सुधारों का वादा करें।

दोनों सेनाएँ हटें।

शरणार्थी लौटें, चुनाव हों, और ज़ेलेंस्की नया जनादेश माँगें।

मसख़रे से नेता बनने तक?
ज़ेलेंस्की युद्ध ख़त्म करने की ताक़त रखते हैं। वे यूक्रेन को बर्बादी से गरिमा की ओर ले जा सकते हैं। यदि उन्होंने साहसी राजनीतिक कदम उठाए, तो उन्हें नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार भी मिल सकता है।
लेकिन अगर वे पश्चिमी तालियों में खोए रहे और शांति की कल्पना से दूर रहे, तो हाँ—वे पद पर रहकर भी मसख़रा ही रहेंगे, एक दुखांत नाटक के पात्र की तरह।
चुनाव उनका है। कल्पनाशीलता दिखाइए, मसख़रे।
