The Dawn of Change in Iran: A Perspective on the Current Conflict
We live in an age of 24/7 saturated media. Everybody and their cousin has a YouTube channel. I am still trying to figure out who won the India-Pakistan war. On YouTube, you can't tell. Well, not true. India's win was decisive.
There is a lot of speculation about Iran. Yes, Iran has struck. It has struck its neighbors who are not parties to the war. But the damage is pretty one-sided. There is a campaign underway.
There is a lot of anxiety about what comes next. Or the oil supply.
Iran is not Iraq. Iran is not Afghanistan. The world saw two million Iranians take to the streets globally. That was almost a quarter of the Iranian diaspora. That shows heightened political consciousness. And the demand was clear. Liberty. Democracy. Right before that, we saw something bigger happen inside Iran. In any normal dictatorship, that uprising would have ended the regime. But the Islamic Republic is different. The way it reacted to the uprising shows how evil the regime is. It does not even blink. If you are protesting, you are not obeying, and if you are not obeying, you are no longer Muslim, and you become worthy of death. That is the thinking. This is a classic fight between good and evil. And the military aspect is not even 50-50. The US-Israel firepower is overwhelming and decisive.
Of course the people will not come out into the streets right now. There is a bombing going on. But once the kinetic action is over, which should be in a few weeks, then the people will come out. Iran is not Iraq. Iran is not Afghanistan. Iran is a civilization that goes back thousands of years.
Iran's capacity to close oil supplies is being ended. Looks like the Iranian Navy is no more. The air force is no more. At this rate, the regime will collapse even before the people come out into the streets.
This is a regional war, not a two-party war. Or a three-party war. Iran has struck so many countries.
The next phase of the military action seems to be about vastly diminishing Iran's capacity to shoot those missiles. That is when the war starts to taper down.
The political challenges are greater. But Iran is Iran. A large, proud country. A civilization going back thousands of years. The diaspora just took to the streets globally. No other diaspora has managed anything like it, perhaps ever. We saw the people in the streets of Iran itself.
I am not thinking, will they come back into the streets? Of course they will. Because they just did. They are waiting for the kinetic action to be over. Then the world will see a celebration of democracy and people power that will be quite a sight.
