Hillary Means More To Reshma Than Barack Means To Me

I don't really know how to explain this, but I am going to try.

All my slights, my hurts, all the topsy turvies along my career path - some days I feel like I have not even started on one yet - all of them can be encapsulated in 500 years of world history. Beyond 500 years I draw a blank. When you go back more than 500 years, I come across stories of all sorts of glorious kings in my part of the world, some of whom were supposedly great, but they were still kings, the arrangement still was feudal. But you hang on to the threads regardless. They are dead and gone.

But for women that span has got to be 10,000 years, at least 10,000 years.

At some level I was really torn in 2007 and 2008. I wished I did not have to choose between the idea of the first black president and the first woman president, I wished I did not have to choose between the two super duper candidates. But I did throw in my lot with Barack, and I did do the best I could for him. The one solace was that perhaps this was the future. Women and black men could compete for the top most jobs and there was not much angst among the masses. This will perhaps feel normal down the line as well, I thought. I took solace in that thought.

Here were two out and out outstanding individuals. And they were both running for president. A more powerful political office has never been designed ever. This was a big deal.

I have worked hard to talk in terms of The New Woman for September 14. I have done it because I concluded early on that that was what was going to be the biggest reason for victory. The techies and brownies will pad the victory margins, but it is the women on the East Side who will have to wake up to give Reshma her much deserved victory on September 14.

And victory it shall be. I smell it. It's near. It's about to happen.

New York Daily News (blog): Clinton On Sidelines In NY Cong Race: Democrats are quietly working to kill rumors that Secretary of State Clinton is “unofficially” backing Democrat Reshma Saujani in her longshot bid to unseat Rep. Carolyn Maloney.......The whispers that Hillary Clinton is secretly backing Saujani enraged party officials and even some folks close to Clinton..... The rumors hit a new high mark this past weekend when the New York Post wrote that “Hillary Clinton … gave her campaign an unofficial nod of approval.” Maloney was surprised to read that since she has long been loyal to Clinton, a source told The Mouth...... Saujani has had a past professional relationship with Clinton, working with her political action committee to raise money and turning down a job she was offered at the State Department..... Saujani and Clinton did meet to talk about the campaign at one point ..... Maloney, meanwhile, was warned early in the campaign not to cart out any past endorsements from Clinton, who backed her in her previous races, a source said. Maloney pulled down from her website one reference to a past Clinton endorsement in the spring
Why would Hillary Clinton support Reshma Saujani? I could think of a few very good reasons.

One would be to say thank you. Reshma was the first scare Hillary 08 gave to Obama 08. Reshma is the reason Obama 08 nicknamed Hillary the Democrat from Punjab before a single vote had been cast. The second scare was the New Hampshire victory.

But it is my suspicion that the bigger reason is not about the past but the future. How would have an Indian felt in 1946? When independence was finally in sight? Hillary has dreamed of gender equality her entire life. And finally she sees it in plain sight.

New York Times: Blazing Campaign Trails In A Certain 3-Inch Heel: I found myself increasingly, and in spite of myself, wondering about her shoes..... Despite the three-inch wedge heels on her black patent leather shoes, after hours of walking, Ms. Saujani, a former hedge-fund general counsel and a successful political fund-raiser, seemed as calmly cheerful as she did at the outset of the day. .... Finally, as we returned to her office, I asked: About those shoes? .... “They’re the Kate Spade wedges,” she said, sagging slightly, as if she had only just then been reminded that she had feet. “They’re these politician-woman shoes.” ...... She had gotten the tip from someone who worked for Hillary Rodham Clinton. They are apparently something of an “it” shoe right now for women in politics: Ms. Saujani said that Kathleen M. Rice, who is running for attorney general, also wore them (a photograph on Ms. Rice’s Facebook page bears that out). The chief of staff for a prominent woman in Congress told me that she, too, religiously relied on her Kate Spade wedge heels (though she spoke on the condition of anonymity because she preferred not to be known for her brand of footwear). ...... “They’re very comfy,” said Annie Mullaly, Ms. Saujani’s finance director. “They’re like Crocs. You’ll see them everywhere once you’ve identified them.” ...... I know. We, the news media, are not supposed to ask female candidates about their hairstyle or their choice of pantsuits over skirts or their shoes. It is irrelevant. It is trivializing. It is sexist. “You would never write about Chuck Schumer’s shoes,” Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand said in a New York magazine article in response to a question about her flats. ...... But the Kate Spade wedge heels are not just one candidate’s shoes. They seem to be the shoes of a circle of younger women aspiring to power or already in it, women directly and indirectly passing on to one another ways of navigating the particular challenges of being a woman in the public eye. A woman must look put-together, but not as if she is a slave to fashion; she must look groomed, but never be spotted grooming..... “we made a bulk order,” said Ms. Mullaly: a pair for Ms. Saujani, and pairs for two campaign workers. Ms. Mullaly said she had a friend in the State Department who raced around airports and bought several pairs.... There was something distinctly next-generation about the sight of Ms. Saujani, in a red dress just above the knee, legs bare atop her three-inch wedges. Ms. Saujani’s comfort level with fashion, with showing off her own good looks, could be considered progress — the latest evolution for female candidates, who first wore versions of male drag, then graduated to the salmon or aqua skirt suits that seemed sold out of a catalog distributed exclusively to female members of Congress..... Whether the news media discuss it or not, women running for office still walk a fine line when deciding what to wear. Their shoes had better be comfortable.

Reshma Is Bigger Than Hillary

Hillary has the smarts but then so does an engineer, a doctor and an astronaut. I am talking here about political instincts and political kinetics. There Reshma is way out there. In her autobiography Hillary credits Bill Clinton of seeing "connections that the rest of us don't see." That rest of us is primarily Hillary.

Someone like me can cut through political brand names like Obama, Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, Gandhi and look at the essence of a political operative. I am talking at that level.

I got sharp political instincts. And I got super political kinetics when it comes to the digital realm. Look at my Nepal work during 2006. I put all that to the service of Obama 08. But as of today I have atrophied social muscles. And my political kinetics are rusty in the social realm. I have been good at it before and I can reclaim it, I think, but as of today, I am not there.

Reshma has super political instincts and she has super political kinetics. She is a political athlete who is in top shape. The thing about political instincts, either you have it or you don't. I don't think you can go to school for that.

The Clintons belong to a different era. In his autobiography Bill Clinton has said he has sent a total of two emails in his life. He is a telephone guy. The internet is my telephone. Bill Clinton is garrulous. If I am garrulous, I am garrulous through my blog. One big reason Bill Clinton was not slam dunk effective in the 2008 race was because social media had caught up on him. One Hillary quote has her saying she can not think in front of a computer. Me, I can not think when I am not in front of a computer. Well, not true. But I do seem to do a lot of thinking in front of my computer. When I am consuming news online, I am all too eager to fire away an email or a blog post. I take interactive seriously.

As far as I am concerned digital is all the rage. Digital levels out the playing field for me. Digital makes my world global. And I need the world to feel global. Digital is more egalitarian. Digital is a richer world.

You could argue some things don't get old, like saying hello, like when you work a podium or a room. Some old prejudices die hard. True and not true. If the web social is web 2.0 I have long called face time web 5.0. But even there a 5.0 experience that is constantly feeding on 2.0 will have an edge.

Hillary is Reshma's Carter.

I don't care if you are a firefighter and I don't care that 9/11 happened, if you are a sexist pig, you are a sexist pig, and I would take that exact same logic to so called progressives acting sexist towards someone like Sarah Palin. What is sexist is sexist. Your wearing the progressive label does not change that. And stop cashing on 9/11 that way. That is wrong and disrespectful. Palin has taken plenty of wrong stands, like in Arizona. Got to beat her on ideas. Acting sexist can not be in the arsenal.

Hillary Is Right About Sexism, Gender Bias

Did Sexism Derail Hillary Clinton? Wall Street Journal Blogs the New York senator has become increasingly vocal about what she views as one of the reasons why: sexism. ........ how many of Clinton’s women supporters feel that she has been the target of sexism throughout the campaign–particularly in the media. ....... some of the attitudes in the press ....... organizing a series of “End Gender Bias in the Media” rallies today in places like Burbank, Calif., as well as in Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, and Michigan. ...... “The manifestation of some of the sexism that has gone on in this campaign is somehow more respectable, or at least more accepted, and . . . there should be equal rejection of the sexism and the racism when it raises its ugly head,” she told the paper. “It does seem as though the press at least is not as bothered by the incredible vitriol that has been engendered by the comments by people who are nothing but misogynists.”
Clinton Puts Up A New Fight Washington Post they tearfully grab her hand to implore her to stick it out, to take her trailing campaign all the way to the Democratic convention in Denver. ..... Clinton for the first time addressed what women have been talking about for months, what she refers to as the "sexist" treatment she has endured at the hands of the pundits, media and others. The lewd T-shirts. The man who shouted "Iron my shirt" at a campaign event. The references to her cleavage and her cackle. ....... "The manifestation of some of the sexism that has gone on in this campaign is somehow more respectable, or at least more accepted, and . . . ........ while there are plenty of men in the stands, it's the women who are most passionate. .......... as her Democratic opponent refers to her politely in the past tense, and the likely Republican presidential nominee simply ignores her, and the pundits snicker that she's delusional and should just step aside already, she is a woman definitely not preparing her remarks for a graceful exit anytime soon. And that's what her supporters want to hear. ....... "I do not want her to quit." ...... She's tenacious and I like that," said Pat ...... she's been treated pretty shabby ...... "Hillary: She is going to take care of women all over the world," Alam ...... She offered a new spin on the arithmetic, pointing out that the states she won would total 300 electoral votes in a general election. ........ you might think she was just warming up for a fight. ........ the "intensity of my support" was rarely reported ...... has looked rested and relaxed. ....... She let out a throaty laugh when asked in Sunday's interview if she could be put "on the couch" for a few minutes to talk about how she has grown through the campaign......... ....... she has become a far better candidate over the course of the campaign, and in particular over the past six weeks as she has become more comfortable and confident about her message. ........ No one is quite sure when Clinton hit her stride, when she stopped caring about the polls, when she took her campaign to the people and gave voters a window into her soul. .......... when she was losing and so had nothing to lose by being herself. ....... For Hillary Clinton, as you stripped away all the varnish, the core person is the most attractive of all.
Yes, there is sexism. Yes, there is gender bias. Yes, it is in the media, yes, it is among the electorate. That is why Hillary is the first serious woman candidate for the most powerful office in the world. Sexism and gender bias was what was holding women back till now, and still holds women back in all walks of life, including family life and relationships.

I am glad Hillary is finally talking about it. I hope she talks some more about it on Obama's ticket. There are too many women who vote Republican because they don't know any better. They are not politically conscious enough to cross over. But if Hillary talks gender like she has started to, many will cross over.

Like some idiot pointed out recently - I think it was Rush Limbaugh - that if Hillary were to get into the White House, we will all have to watch her age. (Rush Limbaugh: Idiot) Women are supposed to get off stage when they age. That is really curious because Hillary is way more pretty than John McCain.

Sexist jokes are not funny. Sexist attitudes are objectively so. Lewd shirts, the Iron My Shirt shout, references to her cleavage and cackle, asking if she could be put on the couch for a few minutes for a question: those are all sexism talking. And it's time to say no. If Hillary can be put through all this indignity, with her money, power, fame, famous husband, smarts, strength, you just have to wonder what women get put through at their workplaces by their male superiors and numerous male colleagues. Hillary has to fight off these little indignities on behalf of the women in the trenches. (Global Trafficking Of Women, Hillary's Beijing Speech)

To fight sexism is to build a progressive coalition of men and women. This is not a men versus women fight. The sexist comments that bother Hillary also bother me, and I happen to be male. Progressive men do want progress on gender.

Hillary Is All The Rage

Obama's nomination all but officially sealed up, her 20 million dollar loan barking loud, this woman Hillary Clinton looks all fired up and ready to go: she is on on all cylinders. Somebody tell her to slow down a bit. The end is near. And she might want to take a week off before she jumps onto the Obama bandwagon.

Hillary has come a long way as a person, and she has brought the women of America and the women of the world a long way with her. My favorite story about Hillary is she shows up in this remote village in India as First Lady and gets surrounded by the local women who tell her, you have no idea what it means to us that you are here.

Hillary is a complete woman. She has worked, she has raised a family. Some would say she has managed to raise a husband. As First Lady of Arkansas back in the 1980s she once said, "If I were to not kick Bill Clinton's ass every morning, he would not amount to anything."

Hillary Is Seeking The Green Party Nomination

The Democratic Party decided that Michigan and Florida may not hold contests before February 5, and if they do, they are not going to count in the nomination fight. All Dems running for president complied. Or at least that is what Hillary said back then. But that was then.

Michigan, Florida, And Sniper Fire

Sniper fire did not happen in Bosnia. Elections did not happen in Michigan, Florida. Wake up, Hillary. If two big states can be disbarred by the Democratic Party, one candidate running for president can also be disqualified by the Democratic Party. Either Hillary should stop acting like elections did happen in Michigan and Florida, or the party should consider disallowing her very candidacy. Rules are rules.

You Had Your Fun

Hillary, you had fun. Now leave. We are going to spend the summer on John McCain, not on you.

People are giving you money so you can pay off your campaign debt, all those unpaid bills. That is not money to keep campaigning.

Shameless

Bill Clinton has been shamelessly using the race card. He has been playing dirty. The 1990s are never over, that is what Bill Clinton is saying. He just does not get the new kind of politics. Barack is ahead in delegates, votes, and number of states, and Bill Clinton thinks his brand of slash and burn politics is still working.

If he loves his wife so much, he should go ahead and build her a Taj Mahal - he sure seems to have the money - instead of trying to play the race card on her behalf. A hundred million? Guys like Bill Clinton are not supposed to end up with a hundred million. Look what you did. Now Hillary thinks middle class is when you make $250,000 a year.

The Osama ad the day before the Pennsylvania primary: that was Bill Clinton's idea. The phone ringing three in the morning right before the Ohio primary: that was Bill Clinton's idea. The idea is that if you can get white, working folks scared, they will not take a second look at the black guy. Black guys are supposed to be scary. Shame on you, Bill Clinton.

For Bill Clinton to compare Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama would be like if I were to compare Bill Clinton to Mahatma Gandhi: apples and avocados.

McCain: Never Ready

If just getting older means you are ready to be Commander In Chief, there are tens of millions of seniors out there, many of them vets. What is Hillary doing trying to suggest McCain is more ready than Barack? Is that her way of suggesting she is young? Just look at old man McCain.

McCain was a lowly soldier in another war that should never have been waged. He was never Commander In Chief material, not then, not now. The guy does not understand economic issues, he does not understand military issues either. A hundred year long war? Was that not in ancient Greece? Times, they are a changing.
