India Pakistan Ceasefire: Most Welcome Step

India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire" effective from 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time on May 10, 2025, following days of military escalation. The ceasefire was confirmed by both nations, with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announcing the agreement. The deal was reached after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted their Indian counterpart, agreeing to halt all military actions on land, sea, and air.
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that the ceasefire resulted from "a long night of talks mediated by the United States," congratulating both countries for their "common sense and great intelligence." U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed this, stating that India and Pakistan agreed to the ceasefire and planned talks on broader issues at a neutral site. However, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that the ceasefire was negotiated directly between the two nations, with no mention of U.S. mediation, suggesting a discrepancy in the narratives. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also noted that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and three dozen other countries facilitated the diplomacy, indicating broader international involvement.
The conflict stemmed from India’s "Operation Sindoor," a series of strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, prompted by a militant attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam the previous month, which India blamed on Pakistan-backed groups. Pakistan denied involvement and responded with counterstrikes, escalating tensions. The ceasefire follows weeks of clashes, with dozens of civilian deaths reported on both sides.
While Trump’s announcement and U.S. officials’ statements highlight American involvement, the lack of confirmation from India about U.S. mediation and the mention of other countries’ roles suggest the process was more multilateral than Trump’s claim implies. The next round of talks between India and Pakistan is scheduled for May 12, 2025.
Sentiment on X reflects mixed views: some users praise Trump’s diplomacy, while others question the extent of his role, aligning with India’s assertion of direct negotiations.
