(September 14 Will Birth The New Woman) Obama needs help keeping Congress now, not two years from now. (Obama Needs To Ride The Reshma Insurgency Wave To November Victory)

And still the idiots in the media had to ask Reshma Saujani after the radio non debate - I DEMAND A TV DEBATE! - if she will vote for Maloney in November if she loses on September 14. Idiots. Reshma Saujani will be voting for herself in November.

New York Observer Endorsement: Reshma 2010 Now Unstoppable

Carolyn Maloney has represented Manhattan's old silk-stocking Congressional district—once the home of John Lindsay and Ed Koch since 1992. It seems fair to say that she hasn't had to break a sweat ever since. Token opponents have been swatted away without much discussion or debate. Every two years, voters in the 14th Congressional District on the Upper East Side and in Queens have marched to the polls and given Ms. Maloney virtually uncontested victories. Not this year.

A 34-year-old hedge-fund lawyer named Reshma Saujani has emerged as a refreshing, energetic alterative to Ms. Maloney. We support her bid to unseat the incumbent as the Democratic Party's nominee in the 14th District. Ms. Saujani is the sort of Democrat who understands that faux populism won't bring back jobs to New York. Ms. Maloney jumped on the bandwagon to "punish" Wall Street after the catastrophes of the last two years, supporting job-killing regulation and interference. Ms. Saujani, who has worked for three hedge funds, has a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between Wall Street and government. She believes New York and the nation will prosper when politicians stop blaming bankers and financial institutions for the country's economic malaise.

Carolyn Maloney has been a capable if unspectacular member of Congress for nearly 20 years. It's time to bring new energy and fresh ideas to the House. Democrats should choose Reshma Saujani.

Maloney Reshma Radio Debate Aftermath

I am still trying to locate the audio of the radio non debate. I mean, come on. A radio debate at 11 AM on a Tuesday on a station no one has heard of?

But when I look at these two video clips, looks to me like Maloney is tired and "maxed out," as noted in the New York Daily News endorsement of my candidate. Reshma looks fresh and ready to go get things done. Her sharps stand out. She is whip smart, she is ready. She is prepared. She is reading the pulse of the nation right.

I demand a TV debate one evening before September 14. I think the two candidates owe that to this city.

I have not gotten my TV debate yet. But based on these two YouTube clips, I am declaring this a no contest. Maloney is nowhere in the picture.




The "debate" I am really waiting for is when Reshma is going to appear on NY1 for half an hour all by herself because Maloney has refused to show up. That is when the tidal wave of victory will begin. If you think the New York Daily News endorsement was a big deal, wait until Reshma shows up on NY1 for 30 minutes. You will be blown away. She will be talking about her vision for the future, about creating jobs.

She outdoes Maloney on health care reform, on Wall Street reform. She is already dreaming of Health Care Reform 2.0 and Wall Street Reform 2.0. And this below is the clincher for me. Finally a paper that "gets" it.

We are Reshma 2010, and we are here to win. We are not here to make a statement.

The Nitty Gritty Of Politics And Idealism



Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, head-and-shoulders por...Image via WikipediaSometimes in the nitty gritty of politics, in all those hourly, daily details that have to be taken care of, in yet another hand that has to be shaken, yet another speech that has to be given, one more time of telling the same story, sometimes it can feel like the idealism has been diluted, possibly even lost, especially when it has been a down hour, or a down day. But the idealism has to continue to burn. The purpose can never be lost sight of.

It is important to learn the mechanics. It is important to get to know the tools of technology that are so important. But beneath it all it is all about the larger goal.

I have long maintained meeting "ordinary people" is the best part of being part of a political campaign.

You can have the best intentions, but if you can't navigate the political process, your ability to deliver gets hindered. Good politicians are like good doctors. They know their stuff.

But often times a lot of politicians get lost in the process. The process took over the purpose a long time ago for them. They are going through the motions. Incumbency can do that to you. You can lose touch.

Obama Needs To Ride The Reshma Insurgency Wave To November Victory

This year the face of change is Reshma, not Obama. And Obama needs to ride the Reshma insurgency wave all the way to victory.

The discontent on the ground is real. The disaffection is real. The hunger for change is even more real than it was in the 2008 season. Back then change was about changing the tone in Washington. Now change is about taking the unemployment level back to 5%. Now change is about tectonic structural changes to the economy. Now change is about explaining the huge debt and deficit. Change is about saying there is no going back, there is only going forward. Change is about saying it is a woman's time now. She is ready.

Obama needs to place his congratulatory phone call to Reshma a-t her victory party (September 14 Will Birth The New Woman) and invite her to accompany him across the country on and off for the next six weeks. (Sep 15 - Oct 31: Obama-Reshma Should Crisscross The Country)

Reshma more than anyone else in this country today is best positioned to talk the talk on how the unemployment rate in this country is to be brought down from its current 10%. And that 10% is average. Some places the figure is more like 50%.

Obama brought change to the White House. Reshma will bring change to Congress. Reshma is the real deal.

This November election is a very real contest. It is not at all obvious which side will win. It is like the Barack-Hillary tussle all over again. The Reshma insurgency wave is the wave to ride. Victory is nowhere close to guaranteed, but I believe it is possible. But the arc does not bend on its own.

Brian Lehrer is a known name unlike the no name radio journalist who is hosting the September 7 radio debate between Reshma Saujani and Carolyn Maloney. And still after listening to this audio clip my suspicions have been confirmed. What we need is TV debates.

Maloney does not even deserve credit for the credit card bill but in this interview she goes ahead and takes credit for the entire Wall Street reform bill. Give a finger and she bites the entire hand.

She dodges the ethics question. She sounds just like Rangel. I might have violated ethics on a few specific occasions, but look at all the other good things I have done.

Reshma, on the other hand, is completely oozing with new ideas and with promise. She is one of those who show up once in a generation, if that.

Maloney is mediocre. Reshma is excellent. I'd vote for excellent.

Suajani said she got the tip from someone who works for Hillary Clinton.

But these sorts of events are arguably a lot more important to an insurgent candidate than any article in the New York Times...... After the forum, I got the chance to ask her a few additional questions, as she walked back to her apartment .... Jezebel: A Defense Of Writing About Female Politicians' Shoes: Reshma Saujani, who's running against Democratic Representative Carolyn Maloney, and attorneyneral candidate Kathleen Rice are fans ..... Even with the meta-analysis, it's hard to shake the feeling that it all is a sexist distraction, even when done by a woman who knows how to talk the talk. This is not about some sort of gag order imposed on tiptoeing journalists. It's a small but vocal pushback in a world where until very recently, Hillary Clinton's pantsuits and "larger bottom" were considered valid subjects to debate..... At the first community conversation on the Lower East Side I thought Reshma was in a presidential mood. She talked of her campaign that she has been running full speed for over 10 months now. I have told staffers - not jokingly - that she has been running for Congress like she were running for president. And she did talk of a four year term, when a Congressperson has a two year term. That totally went up my alley. I struggle to get excited about the legislative branch. Legislative is like, meh. I need a little more action to my routine than that. Once I was reading a book about the Bush presidency while Bush was in office, and I was gripped, and I remember thinking, I don't seem to care who is president as long as someone is, and I get to read up on the details.

But at the second community conversation on the Upper East Side, she was more of in a legislative mood. She hinted at going from the House to the Senate and off to retirement to go build "schools for young girls in Afghanistan." She mentioned Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer in the same sentence. I think that is a hint at a state with two female Senators. If I were Schumer I'd get worried or I'd convince her to look in the direction of the White House instead, if she needs any convincing that is.

Thank God Reshma has not hinted at the judiciary. That is even less action than the legislative. Judiciary is not action, it is deliberation. I like to leave that to the judges. I am glad they are there, but I am glad I am not one of them. Respect.

Two Routes

One is to win in 2010, become Obama's running mate in 2012, and run for the top job in 2016. Another is to lose in 2010, run again and win in 2012, and then run for the top job in 2016. The first route is a surer path to a 2016 win, the second route is a surer path perhaps to a two term presidency.

My preference is for the first path. I am looking at a 2010 victory. I think we stand at 50-50 right now. We got enough time to tilt this thing. I think about a week before the election, the East Side is going electric, and then we should be able to totally swamp Maloney.

The thing is this. 2016 is to be the year of the first woman president. And it is for Reshma to make sure she is that woman. I think she is the best positioned. I mean, when was the last time a New Yorker went to the White House? FDR was the last one. And Albany has been in a flunk since. The best way to "reform" Albany is to send a New Yorker to the White House. What Albany has is a self esteem problem.

New York Magazine: Maloney: Saujani Is Using ‘Karl Rove’ Tactics:Saujani says that her fellow Upper East Side Democrat has "questionable ethics" when it comes to fund-raising, and that "Maloney ranks at the bottom of our New York delegation, and I’m saying that on the record. And I think Carolyn Maloney represents the problem. We have in Congress, I think, a lot of mediocre representatives.”

The Villager: Campaign Wedge Issue?: The reporter, it seems, was simply blown away by Saujani’s cool-looking black patent leather Kate Spades, with 3-inch wedge heels — which resulted in her writing 24 column inches all about them..... It’s hard to say where this race is right now with a lack of recent polling. Reshma probably has the momentum, but how far up the hill will it push her? I’ve seen more Reshma placards pasted around restaurants and bodegas in my neighborhood than I expected...... A smuggled-in cell phone camera wouldn’t hurt either.

Dress Code



My current dress code is this all black stuff above but instead of a black shirt, I wear the red, white and blue Reshma 2010 shirt. The first thing to go out the window for me was the tie. Then out went the dress shirt. But I like the rest. And I like the color black.

I bought black pants and black Brazil and Argentina shirts for the World Cup. Made me look like an amateur.

Despite the three-inch wedge heels on her black patent leather shoes, after hours of walking, Ms. Saujani, a former hedge-fund general counsel and a successful political fund-raiser, seemed as calmly cheerful as she did at the outset of the day. .... You’ll see them everywhere once you’ve identified them.” ...... I know. Ms. Saujani’s comfort level with fashion, with showing off her own good looks, could be considered progress — the latest evolution for female candidates, who first wore versions of male drag, then graduated to the salmon or aqua skirt suits that seemed sold out of a catalog distributed exclusively to female members of Congress..... Whether the news media discuss it or not, women running for office still walk a fine line when deciding what to wear. Their shoes had better be comfortable.

New York Observer: Reshma Camp Hasn't Accepted Debate Invite: "We need a debate that will be seen by voters in the district," said Saujani campaign spokesman James Allen.... they are still looking to find out what the details are, including how long the Q and A session with audience listeners will last and whether or not there will be television cameras present.... Saujani's campaign noted that the pair have received four invitations to debate—from NY1, from the League of Women Voters, from Baruch College and from a TV station in Queens—and would like to do any of those in addition the WWRL debate.... They also note that they are still trying to discuss the matter with the Maloney campaign. "We have not had any conversations with her campaign. Our campaign left multiple messages this afternoon for Matt Tepper, Maloney's campaign manager, and our calls were not returned."

I have not talked to anybody on the campaign staff or anything like that, so I am not speaking on behalf of the campaign or anything like that, but this would be my stand. Reshma 2010 will accept the radio debate invite for September 7 if Maloney will accept the Baruch College debate invite.

Presidential candidates have debated at Baruch College. Maloney is never going to run for president, but this would be her last chance to debate in such an august setting.

Who does Carolyn Maloney think she is?

The best thing would be to accept all four debate invites. It is about democracy.

Reshma Saujani Loves America


Reshma Saujani loves America like no white American I ever met. You should listen to her say things like "I am the daughter of political refugees," and "I went to public schools all my life." She makes it sound like political asylum were a spiritual concept.

The closest thing to that I have is my appreciation for the democratic framework. It is like religion to me. I appreciate democracy like people who always grew up in democracies don't.

I belong to the progressive political religion. I put way more time into my political religion than I do to the religion of my birth, Hinduism, or my second adopted religion, Buddhism, (in Nepal the two don't feel like separate religions) and my religions of curiosity, Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

As for love and all that, I am more of a netizen, a global citizen. I don't feel like there is anything special about the American landmass. The riches of this country can be created anywhere where we can take the ideals of democracy and the market mechanism, and universal broadband would be the best, fastest way to do that.

But I must admit the red, white and blue Reshma 2010 shirt is growing on me. That is all I wear these days. I have three. I think I might pick up a few more the next time I am the Reshma 2010 headquarters.
