Golden Globes

So, I read the full Meryl Streep speech in a Washington Post article, not because she bashed anybody, but because I have liked her acting for so long. She has been the Fidel Castro of Hollywood, in how long she has dominated. She is easily the best actor of her generation, male or female. She has this range that no one else has had in the industry. She does her thing. And is a joy to watch. And I thought she was also looking fabulous.

The two Bollywood mavens were both looking golden. I looked up on Google Images. Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. I am sure both were much watched back in India. I believe they are just getting started. I expect them to do very well over the years. Bollywood needs to start making movies for the mainstream American audiences. India, after all, is the largest English speaking country in the world.

The sheer volume of PC's work is mind boggling.

Priyanka Chopra set to produce a Nepalese-Sikkimese film titled Paua

PC is not the only or even the first Bollywood biggie with her own production house but her foray into regional movies does stand out, and I have watched it with interest. Bhojpuri and now Nepali. I am conversant in both! I attended high school in Kathmandu after all.

Diversity is a good thing. It is like would you rather have one giant paddy field where the Amazon is, or do you like the forest better? That is not even a question.

Technology is fast catching up with diversity. It is only a matter of time before Artificial Intelligence will be able to translate from every language to every other language. Which means your first language spoken by only 10 million people will be as good as English for science and commerce. Is that big? I think so. The point is the languages are not going away and that's a good thing.

Another disruption is digital technology. Why does a movie have to be two or three hours? Why can't it be 20 or 30 minutes? Why do you need a movie theater? Why can't movies have online releases only? When you start asking those questions you realize there can be a movie industry in every town in India. The costs go down drastically. So you make a Bhojpuri mini movie and post it online and next thing you know you have a global audience. There are tiny pockets of Bhojpuri speakers all over the world. The YouTube ad revenue might not be enough though, a pay per view model might work better. One dollar per movie? How about 10 cents?

Perhaps PPP (Purple Pebble Pictures) ought to build that platform. It would be like the Apple app store. It is pay per view, it is global, the platform has strict editorial guidelines, the revenue split is 30-70, something like that.

I look at Sanjay Leela Banshali and I think, this is a global level talent, but his heart is still colonized. Why could he not cast someone like Priyanka Chopra and make a movie in English for the mainstream American audience?

There is no dearth of story writers. You fish for stories in the global exploding literature market. And you buy movie making rights and you adapt.

Priyanka Chopra, The Media And The Bigger Picture

Priyanka Chopra Loves Big Diamonds and Yachts: ‘I Work Very Hard to Spoil Myself’

Mumbai, New York City, Toronto, London, Shanghai, all these megacities are perhaps more like each other than the rest of their own countries. And if you want a slice of India in New York there's always Little India, or full blown Jackson Heights, which is more like Sitamadhi (Bihar). Plus, after doing 50 movies in India, I doubt Priyanka Chopra did not feel prepared enough facing the camera in the US. In fact, it looks bad on Bollywood, at least the corporate aspects. Hollywood is taking the PC show all over the world and minting money. Why could not Bollywood make movies for the mainstream American audience?

A movie star acts as per the script. It is the writer who decides. The director shapes the presentation. And the 24/7 media saturation topped with social media omnipresence, and you see this constant feed. The society feeds the art feeds the society. It is an ongoing conversation. To quote PC: "Alex is nothing like me."

A few days back I blogged on the topic of the media in two countries as seen through this crossover movie star.

Seeing Priyanka Chopra On The Kapil Sharma Show

Only one episode earlier he goes full blown sexist on some TV news anchor, a new name and face to me.

I am sorry to make note, because I greatly admire Kapil Sharma, who I once called the funniest Homo Sapien on earth. He is the king of comedy globally right now. I like him much.

I actually have a news section on my Google News page for Priyanka Chopra. I also have one on Modi.

One news item today presents PC in a full Meterial Girl Madonna mode.

Priyanka Chopra Loves Big Diamonds and Yachts: ‘I Work Very Hard to Spoil Myself’

It is in sharp contrast to a news clip on YouTube from years ago where she says, I don't enjoy shopping.

The more famous you get bigger the mess the media makes of you. Take Amitabh Bachchan, a genuinely nice person. The media ran with the Amitabh Rekha non story for literally decades.

In politics I have seen this happen to Bill Clinton, or the Clintons. There is this political spectrum. And every point on that spectrum needs its own angle. And there is a media outlet to feed every such expectation.

Seeing Priyanka Chopra On The Kapil Sharma Show

Kapil Sharma has reached unprecedented heights in Indian comedy and most of the time he is respectful and playful. But once in a while he shows flashes of arrogance.

Or maybe the media is thoroughly sinful everywhere, expressing the basest sentiments in all societies, especially since it went 24/7 and there is so much time slot to fill. I have never owned a television, and written articles might be less heavy on the gossip angles.

Watching Priyanka Chopra's media interactions in America and India has been educational for me. The American media comes across as deeply racist. The Indian media comes across as super, off the charts sexist.

Perhaps the Robert De Niro route was better. The movie star who defined an era absolutely refused media interviews and when such became absolutely inescapable he would come across as incoherent, a man of a few words, if not grunts, and even a mute. His point was, my work is in the movies. If you like my work, watch my movies. He felt media appearances took away from his movies by diluting his image and the character building in the movies. He was right, but that distance might not be possible no more in this age of media saturation. Robert De Niro must watch in horror as movie stars these days make a movie and then go on the media circuit to promote the movie. He must feel that robs from the audience the movie experience.

And so Kapil Sharma makes this grand super sexist statement on the only movie star to have reached the heights of the two biggest movie industries in the world..... by organizing a band baaja barat. Hillary Clinton took a lot of heat in 1992 for being a career woman. So I guess being a career woman in India is still a really big deal. It is a new phenomenon.

Kapil Sharma is a genuinely talented person, but the super sexism of the society he springs forth from comes through.

It's like a few weeks back I watched an old interview of Priyanka Chopra and it was 30 minutes of the TV show host completely ignoring PC like she was not even there, because she is a woman.

This is sad because PC is ascendant in Hollywood and poised to reach greater heights. That ought to be a self esteem boost to Indians everywhere in all walks of life, a self esteem boost also to Indian men, especially to Indian men. Because there are many more Indian men trying to do things.

Priyanka Chopra, Racism, Sexism, America, India

Binge watching Quantico is on my to do list. I binge watched Kevin Spacey and Amitabh Bachchan, and it was a great experience. I also have binge watched the show 24. It is my impression Quantico is along the lines of 24. But Priyanka Chopra is all over the media. I have noticed for months now. She is on the cover of magazines. There are videos of her making appearances on American TV all over YouTube. She was the most googled after Leonardo DiCaprio at the last Oscars. That is a powerful metric. What you have to note there is that Priyanka met Leo while she is on the way up and Leo is on the way down. Dwayne Johnson is the top paid actor in Hollywood? Not for long if Priyanka has her way.

She is a first. No Hollywood actor has ever eased into Bollywood. No Bollywood actor has ever eased into Hollywood like she has. The world is her oyster. Pun intended. For her mother seems to suggest PC is all into oysters. There are pictures on her Instagram of her ordering oysters in many parts of the world.

What rankles though is the media treatment. The tablet that God handed over to Moses on the mountain was also meant for the media. Take note.

The glaring racism and sexism is so in your face. For example, there is one dumb white male, and two young black women, all into fat shaming PC. That is a pattern. You connect the dots and you see there is some Roger Ailes type fatso somewhere in the background pulling the strings. When you deliver the racist, sexist message through a black woman, then maybe it is not racist and sexist, that is the thinking.

Many working class Americans work two jobs. That is not lazy. An average American is fat. But that is not about people being lazy. The average American is fat for the same reason something as gigantic as the Pacific is choking with plastic. The American Big Pharma has managed to kill half the gut bacteria in American tummies. That is the top reason why the average American is fat. It is chaos.

Bollywood is not the Indian version of Hollywood any more than the thali is the Indian version of the hamburger.

The family in America is weak precisely because Americans do not worship Lord Rama, the first human incarnation of the Holy Father. Rama created the family, and established justice is above wealth, knowledge, power. Lord Krishna created the modern state and laid out the rules for use of force to uphold justice. Lord Jesus built the bridge to heaven, and created the person on earth, the person of the one person one vote democracy, the basic unit of the modern economy. India could not become a modern state and economy unless it opens up its heart to Jesus.

Quantico

This is the best media treatment of Priyanka Chopra I have come across.

The Paley Center: Quantico

Makes me want to binge watch the show. I am thinking it might be online somewhere.

The nugget for me was the real FBI Director saying the real Quantico is not as diverse as the show Quantico and he would like to change that.

After all, India is the largest English speaking country in the world.

The Right Way To Interview Priyanka Chopra

This is the right way.

No risk of Indian jihad.

She is Bollywood royalty.

People in America think Bollywood is the Indian version of Hollywood. And it is not.

For one it is much bigger. They produce three times as many movies.

Two, Indian fans are much more diehard. The most admired actors have pretty much deity status.

Three, family values are intact. Indians worship Rama, the first human incarnation of Yahweh, or Vishnu. Rama created the family on earth like Jesus created the person on earth.

America and India are twin countries. If not that, at least sibling countries. Democracy is a beautiful thing.

Priyanka Chopra And American Racism

America is a fundamentally racist country. America is as much into mindless, unthinking racism as people generally were into mindless assaults 2,000 years ago.

Hollywood is the most racist place in America with the possible exception of the US Senate.

You get to see some of that when Priyanka Chopra gets interviewed on American TV.

So Ellen. She is gay and female and small. And so she is the make you feel good person. If you can tolerate Ellen then you have proven you are a really really tolerant person. Hillary picked Ellen as the first show after the debates. Because Ellen is gay and female and small.

But Ellen has to ask Priyanka Chopra, "Do they drink over there in India?"

Some of the most famous Bollywood songs are around drinks. There is an entire genre of songs - ghazals - that revolve entirely around drinks. Not saying that drinking is essential and wonderful and when you drink you have really arrived or anything like that. But do they drink anywhere in the world?

The point is, if you have to ask, do they drink in India, you are about to ask, do you ride elephants to school? I rode an elephant once, but not to school, and I did not even grow up in India, I grew up an Indian in Nepal: my kind are still waging a civil rights movement for basic rights for being Indian.

Do you ride elephants to school? That actually was a question Priyanka Chopra was asked when she attended high school for a few years in Flushing, Queens, of all places.

But Ellen is a candlelight compared to a dumb white guy who shall remain nameless because I really don't know his name. He goes ahead and calls Priyanka Chopra "Miss Piggy Chops, because you eat like a pig, all the time, and your last name is Chops." On live television. Prime time television.

I was dumbstruck. If Indians were into things like jihad they would call a jihad on that dumb white ass, if you have any idea how popular Priyanka Chopra is in India.

She is Bollywood royalty.

But then this is a country where 40% of the people have felt the urge to delegitimize the first black president and the Senate Majority Leader would rather burn the US constitution for good rather than let the president appoint a judge like that document says.

But it is also a country where the top paid actor right now is a black guy. Opposite whom Priyanka Chopra is starring in a movie.

She came, she saw, she conquered even as the dumb white guys of the world stayed busy asking their dumb questions, like, can I call you Miss Piggy Chops?

She has the Body Mass Index of someone who has not destroyed half her gut bacteria.

Racism is a lot of people's idea of an ice breaker. I am going to say something racist and you are going to act like you are okay with it, then I am going to be nice to you about other things. Because I need to get the big picture right first.

But if you don't put up with that first racist comment they are utterly lost, like you had suddenly dropped them in the jungles of Burma without so much as a map.

Deepika Padukone to present award at MTV EMAs

Strictly business.

I came I saw I conquered

This is a geopolitical shift.

Priyanka Chopra's Crossover Is A Geopolitical Event

Priyanka Chopra on Nightline

This is the first time a top Bollywood star has eased into being a top Hollywood star. This is big.

America and India now are what America and Britain used to be. The oldest modern democracy and the largest democracy are natural allies.

Priyanka Chopra is like Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai. She is a role model.

And she stays Indian.

Chris Rock On Race In Hollywood

I have been reading this article by Chris Rock in the Hollywood Reporter. He is talking about race in Hollywood and how it is a huge factor. And Hollywood is supposed to be the liberal island of America that you rail against in the so-called "heartland." I call it the hinterland. Chris is saying Hollywood is white country. It is a whites only country club.

Chris Rock is great. You have to understand that I really, really, really like comedy. I like a good laugh, what can I say! And Chris Rock is awesome. I'd put him right up there with Jerry Seinfeld in how funny I think he is, he is right there with Raju Shrivastav. Chris Rock is top of the line. He is really good at what he does.

The Indian action is in India. India is coming along, like China is coming along. If you ask me even Africa is coming along. In about five years Africa will be like China and India. As in, you will feel it. And Indians have it in tech. It is the IITs of India that made the dot com boom in America possible. Thank Nehru! Satya Nadella is just the icing on the cake. Sundar Pichai could take over Google any time. And there are Indians in the second rung of every major tech company. If you don't have Indians in strong positions, you are not a serious tech company.

But race is a powerful factor. "Race matters powerfully," Barack Obama said back in 2007. It is a factor.

Chris has a limited political vocabulary. Let me put it this way. He is not equipped to deal with the politics of race. But I am gathering a lot of facts from his article about race in Hollywood. It is not a pretty picture, and it needs to change. It is not just Ferguson. It is also Hollywood.

The Movie Business

If I were not a Third World guy who felt an obligation to save the world - for me the word is not change, it is save, think malnutrition, think infant mortality - I think I might have gone into the movie business. I really like movies. But instead I have put time into politics, which I am really, really good at, and I have put some time into tech. When I have not had the option for tech entrepreneurship - like now - I have focused on tech blogging. Even tech for me has always been politics by other means. I have consistently talked of internet access as the voting right for this 21st century.

I keep having this thought that I want to befriend someone like Matt Damon and say, look, buddy, I don't have the time on my hands to do what you do, but I need you to insert me in your movies, about a minute per movie. That way I can have my cake and eat it too. I can be in the movies while still primarily trying to save the world.

I kid you not, in the Fall of 2007, I spent some considerable time wanting to cut a video clip of me reenacting that early scene in Scarface where Tony is being interrogated. I went ahead and bought the DVDs for study purposes. I should have either not had the strong, recurring thought, or I should have gone ahead and made the video clip and avoided myself a whole lot of hassle eight months later.

In the scene I had in mind, I had Hillary people interrogating me. I had the Obama 08 sticker on my cheek, and that was my scar. I had the DVDs, I had a few Obama 08 stickers in stock just for the purpose. I had my video camera.

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

I won a best actor award in middle school.

How My Grandfather Became Mayor The First Time

One thing I do hope to do a bunch of down the line is video blogging. Vlogging, for short.
